Individuals in the School-aged Paraeducator II Certificate Program generally are more interested in working with slightly older students ages 8 – 21.
The pre-K to grade 12 classroom of today looks very different from that of 20 or even 10 years ago. In order for certified and licensed staff to work successfully with students, they must personalize the learning for each student so that the individual needs of each child are met. To help teachers, special educators, and specialists do their job, paraeducators (also called 1 to 1 assistants, paraprofessionals, teacher assistants, teacher aides, etc.) have been helping out for over fifty years.
Paraeducators working under the direct supervision of a certified or licensed professional provide support to classrooms of students, small groups of students, or to individual students to help them meet the increasingly higher academic standards of today, as well as social, emotional, physical and health standards. Their roles may be in one subject area, such as language arts, or in several areas. Their jobs may change not only from year to year, but as the needs of the district change based on student enrollments and student populations. Thus, the certified Paraeducator II must be ready to work in a variety of settings and in a variety of subjects almost at a moment’s notice.
All candidates for Paraeducator Certification II must have a minimum of a high school diploma/GED. In addition, candidates must either:
Hold an Associate’s Degree;
Have a minimum of 2 years of study (48 credits) at the college level; or
Demonstrate knowledge of reading, writing, math (or readiness for these subjects) at the college level through a formal assessment process.
An individual applying for Paraeducator II Certification must also demonstrate skills in a variety of areas. These skills include the following:
Knowledge of, and instructional skills in, reading and writing;
Knowledge of, and instructional skills, in mathematics;
Supporting the classroom environ-ment, and sensitivity to diversity;
Applicable laws, regulations and rules related to students and schools; and
Maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.
