What is Service Learning?

Service Learning engages students working in teams applying classroom developed knowledge and skills to the solutions of community based problems.

What does it provide?

  • Hand-on learning experiences and connections to the community for the students
  • Real world teaching opportunities for the faculty

Who can I Contact About This?

Role of the Community

  • Work with faculty to develop the challenge statement for the project.
  • Meet with students to review the needs of the project.
  • Provide feedback to the students on their solutions to the challenge.
  • Provide students with an opportunity for civic engagement within their community.
  • Enjoy the benefits that Service Learning provides.

Role of the Student

  • Serve as a resource with knowledge, skills and values.
  • Work on or off site to meet the needs of the community partner.
  • Use their creative problem solving skills.
  • Bring in outside perspectives to the community partner challenge.
  • Provide enthusiasm and energy.
  • Act as contributing community partners.

Role of the Faculty

  • Help establish realistic expectations for students and community partner.
  • Frame or formulate the problem statement and needs identification.
  • Establish standards for academic performance and expected student skills and knowledge base.
  • Oversee management of project, while monitoring and evaluating student work.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and community partner.
